2003-05-11//12:30 a.m. Kia Ora- -Neil & Tim Finn, Angels Heap, 1993 Man, I can't believe that I didn't mention anything about the excitement on Monday afternoon. OK, I was driving home from work down Fowler right in front of University Mall when a jerk in a beautiful black four-door F-150 truck cut me off rather closely. (I took exceptional notice of the auto because I was envious of the vehicle and was thinking that a jerk driver like that didn't deserve that truck.) I watched the driver then swerve into the right lane, forcing two cars to take evasive action to avoid a collision, in the mean time crashing in to each other. The car on the ouside lane ended up jumping onto the sidewalk and totally taking out a telephone pole, totalling the auto. Everyone just sort of stopped and I looked up and saw the truck was stopped and looking at the accident. Then it took off. I floored it and chased them, as they turned off into the Walgreens parking lot, as if they were going to return to the accident. Instead, they took a round-a-bout route through the Sports Authority parking lot. There's only one exit so I slowed down and waited on the other side of a row of cars, and sure enough they emerged right in front of me. I waited for them to drive back to the accident (a right turn); they took off and hauled ass (a left turn) and headed straight out towards the back side of the mall. They escaped, fled the scene. A perfect escape, except for one thing--I got the license plate number. I drove back to the accident and was able to give the information to the officer at the scene. He took all sorts of information from me and thanked me for stopping. He called me the next morning and said thanks to my action they were able to apprehend the woman in the truck and charge her with a list of charges, including hit and run. It was very cool and said that if I didn't do what I did they wouldn't have been able to get the driver. (Dude, he called me 'citizen' and all that--I felt like Batman!) I asked about the injuries of the driver who hit the pole (at this point I didn't even know if they were alive or dead) and she had a shattered heel, but nothing more. It was a relief in ways, as it could have been her life. That's what happened. I'm glad that I was able to do something good for someone and that the damage and injuries were much less than they could have been (imagine if that sidewalk was full). I hope that if me or any of my family/friends are ever in that situation someone will do the same. Anyway, that's about it. Drive safely. Keep the faith. -N.
