2003-06-11//7:50 p.m. Kia Ora- -t.A.T.u., Not Gonna Get Us, 2002 OK, I have a new band I’m gaga for and that’s t.A.T.u, the teenaged lesbian Russian chicks. First I wrote them off as mindless pap with a notorious marketing strategy. After hearing the snippet of All The Things She Said as Victoria’s entrance (one of my favourite WWE wrestlers) the song got stuck in my head. I had just assumed that it was the Spice Girls or some one-off band (listen to it, it’s very much in that way). Next, I got rope-a-doped by waking one morning to the video for Not Gonna Get Us. That song and video is pure teenager desperation runaway fantasy—total and complete unbridled love that burns fast and bright and has no choice but to explode. (Hell, I know what I mean even if none of ya’ll do.) I mean the video has everything—escaping from a plane, hijacking a tanker truck, driving at break neck speed through a blizzard, setting the tanker on fire, climbing up on top, and riding into oblivion. God bless ‘em! The knockout punch was (surprisingly, not the MTV Movie Awards performance) finding out that they covered The Smiths’ How Soon Is Now?. That just did it for me. Now their CD is constantly on and I feel like dancing around like a 15-year-old wannabe-lesbian school girl. Erm, maybe I shouldn’t admit last that part. Keep the faith. -N.
